Natural Expectorant Tea
1 teaspoon (5 ml) anise seed
1 cup (240 ml) water
1 teaspoon (5ml) honey, optional
Expectorants are compounds that help thin mucous, allowing the body to cough more productively. Expectorants are found in many over-the-counter cold relievers, but if you'd like to try a natural alternative, experts advise turning to anise seed. Put the anise seeds in a shallow bowl and crush slightly by firmly pressing down on the seeds with the back of a spoon. Bring water to a gentle boil. Transfer seeds to a cup and steep the seeds in the water for 10 minutes. If you find the licorice flavor to be bitter, sweeten with a bit of honey.
