You can lull yourself to sleep or get a jump start on beating jet lag by using scents. Studies show that aromas directly affect the brain, and different odors have varying results. Bring along a favorite scent that you find soothing and relaxing, such as vanilla or lavender. Place a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and store in an old pill bottle. Take a few whiffs at the beginning of – and throughout – the flight to settle inner turbulence and let yourself get some rest. In preparation for landing, the stimulating aroma of pine, peppermint or a pungent citrus blend will clear your head and revive sleepy senses. Since the cotton only has a few drops of essential oils on it and the pill bottle is not filled with liquid, you shouldn't have any problems with security at the airports either.
