Overview of Depression
Many people experience the blues from time to time – usually a few days in which you feel like you are in a funk. This feeling usually goes away…usually. If not having the blues that last longer and the feeling of being hopeless, unmotivated, sad, worthless etc, can last much longer. Depression is a chronic illness that can lead to a variety of serious emotional and physical problems. - Spend Time With Others: Spending time with others generally keeps moral higher than being alone all the time. Make sure to spend that quality time with people that are of a positive nature. Sharing your feelings or hanging with others who are negative will only make your symptoms worse.
- Do Things You Enjoy: Engage in activities that inspire you, encourage you and bring you joy. Don't be afraid to try something new.
- Avoid Alcohol and Illicit Drugs: It may feel like drugs and alcohol wave the symptoms of depression, however, in the long run you are only making the situation worse and adding the the level of treatment you will need. Do not make it harder on yourself by "checking out" on drugs or alcohol.
- Get Plenty of Sleep: A good night sleep is more important if you are struggling with depression. If you are having difficulty and not sure what to do talk with your Dr. Keep in mind your sleeping conditions, hours and attire when figuring out how to get a good nights sleep.
- Don't Take on Too Much Responsibility: Feeling defeated, overwhelmed and set up by taking on too much responsibility only exacerbates the problem. Set small goals, only give your self responsibilities you can handle and set limits for yourself.
- Look for Opportunities to be Helpful: Helping others and giving of yourself is a positive way to help increase your worthiness to yourself. It feels good and its simple.
