All Natural Cough Remedy – Marshmallow and Licorice Cough Syrup
This wonderful all natural recipe is great for those itchy throats that really cause irritation. The honey and eucalyptus ingredients are also contain all natural antifungal properties that help to ward off germs inside the body.
Licorice has been used for centuries as an expectorant to loosen phlegm. When mixed with marshmallow, which contains a soothing mucilage, it reduces coughing and helps to soothe sore throats. This syrup is especially good for dry or tickly coughs. Quantities differ depending on whether you use fresh or dried marshmallow root.
If using dried marshmallow root:
4 tbsp dried marshmallow root, coarsely chopped
2 dried licorice roots, broken into small pieces
3 heads/bunches fresh elderberries
1 tsp anise seeds
1 sprig of fresh eucalyptus leaves (about 8)
2 cups (500 ml) water
1/2 cup (100 ml) honey
juice of 1 lime
5 tbsp glycerin
If using fresh marshmallow root:
8 tbsp fresh marshmallow root, coarsely chopped
4 dried licorice roots, broken into small pieces
other ingredients as above
- Put the marshmallow, licorice, elderberries, cloves, tangerine peel, anise, and eucalyptus leaves into a pan with the water. Simmer until the liquid is reduced by one-fifth. Remove the licorice and eucalyptus leaves and discard.
- Blend the mixture in a blender until smooth. Pour back into the pan an add the honey, lime juice, and glycerin, then stir and simmer for 2 minutes.
- Pour into sterilized, clear 1/2 pint ( 250 ml) bottles.
Use: Take 2 tbsp 3 times daily
Storage: Keep refrigerated; use within 2 weeks
